GMDC to Develop India's First AI-Powered Rare Earth Supply Chain Observatory with £600,000 Investment
Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) partners with the University of Cambridge to create India's first AI-powered observatory tracking the rare earth supply chain, enhancing resilience and informing strategic decisions.
The Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) has embarked on a transformative project to establish India's first AI-powered rare earth supply chain observatory. This ambitious initiative, developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge, aims to revolutionize how rare earth elements (REE) are tracked and managed, thereby enhancing India's resilience in the global supply chain.
Set as a phased two-year program with an investment of £600,000, the collaboration with Cambridge will see the establishment of a dedicated Rare Earth Observatory at GMDC’s International Centre of Excellence in Mining. The observatory is designed to provide real-time insights into the REE value chain, from mining to magnet production, tracking price fluctuations, processing capabilities, and potential supply disruptions.
Through advanced AI technology, this observatory will offer an interactive intelligence platform that equips policymakers and industry leaders with the tools needed for strategic decisions. By integrating GMDC’s mining expertise with the renowned analytical capabilities of Cambridge's Institute for Manufacturing, the initiative promises to place India at the forefront of rare earth supply chain management.
With India's consumption of rare earth permanent magnets expected to double by 2030, driven by sectors like electric vehicles and renewable energy, the need for a robust and responsive supply chain is critical. The observatory not only addresses this demand but also provides a strategic advantage by offering data-driven insights necessary for policy formulation and industrial procurement.
GMDC's Managing Director, Roopwant Singh, emphasized the strategic importance of the observatory, stating, "Rare earth elements are not just a commodity story, but a sovereignty story." The initiative is a step towards creating a comprehensive AI-driven intelligence architecture for India’s REE value chain, ensuring that the country can secure its position in the global market.
This project marks a significant milestone in India's journey towards becoming a major player in the global rare earth industry, offering a model of how technology and strategic partnerships can drive industrial innovation and economic growth.
